New telephone numbers for Matava!

Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort has installed a new Satellite Communications System with new telephone numbers. We have new methods of contacting Matava in the Fiji Islands including new telephone and fax numbers and a new Skype name! All running off the in-house solar power!

Our new permanent contact numbers are:

TELEPHONE:    +679 603 0685

FAX:    +679 603 0684

SKYPE:    MatavaFiji

My status

"And so what does this mean to you?" I hear you ask? Well one of the big step forwards is that we now have a 24 hour contact via Skype technology and voice-mail there-in on site at the resort. This will revolutionise our online reservations and booking system.

Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort Matava Resort is proud to install this communications solution purely using the alternative power already available at the resort.

We will maintain our current CDMA/Easytel phone (+679 368 0080) until the end of August 2010, at which point they it be disconnected.

The new system runs on the Gilat SkyEdge System which supports telephony, broadband data and video communications via satellite. It is optimized for transaction-oriented applications, business continuity needs, legacy protocols, rural telephony deployments and multi-topology networks with mesh, star and multi-star topologies.

The system has an uplink speed of 64kbps where the service and support are provided by Connect Fiji

Not only does the new service out perform its predecessors, the satellite network is designed to perform even under the heavy tropical rain.

The equipment installed at Matava is called a VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal). It consists of a 1.8m dish (situated hidden away behind the resort office) and outdoor electronics for communicating with the satellite and an indoor unit to which our standard telephone /fax lines and laptops are connected. The intelligence within the indoor unit processes the calls and distributes them to assigned telephone lines.

Power for the terminal is purely 12V DC and is supplied by our own in-house solar panels and batteries in our Main Bure complex.

Watch this space for the next phase in the program which is to make WiFi available directly to guests laptops in the Main Bure (shhhhh... this is currently top secret info!)

Once again, here are our new permanent contact numbers:

The Matava Foundation Supports Local Primary School through Fundrainsing Efforts at Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort

The Matava Foundation Supports Local Primary School through Fundrainsing Efforts at Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort

Kadavu, Fiji, 26 April 2010:
Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort has helped a local primary school fund the year ahead through events organised by its Matava Foundation.

George, Barman at Matava, gets down dancing!

Matava Guests enjoy a dance at Meke

Ratu Varani Memorial School (The Kadavu Primary School) in Kadavu has been fundraising over the last couple of weeks to make up the shortfall between budgets and government funding. This is normal at this time of year when parents and freinds of the school join together to support education in the islands.

There are 2 houses in the school.  The Blue House went fishing and the Yellow House invited Matava to help.

Through The Matava Foundation, 2 evenings were organised over 2 weeks to run fundrasing events at the resort. Over the course of these events the Matava Foundation and resort guests contributed F$2,000 dollars to the School Fund.

As a thank you by the parents, a thank you meke was held in celebration. This cultural, fun evening for us held at the resort was warmly greeted by staff and guests alike.

In keeping with the resort's community and environmental policies, Matava Foundation supports educational and conservation efforts by the local communities and villages.

Matava Director Mr Richard Akhtar said "This latest event was one of the most successful to date, and we hope to repeat it in years to come".

Main bure at Matava, Kadavu, FijiMatava has again won the PADI Asia Pacific Member Awards 2009 in the category Project AWARE Marine Environmental Award 2009

KADAVU, FIJI ISLANDS - 16th February 2010 - Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort is proud to announce that it is an official 2009 recipient of The Project AWARE Marine Environmental Achievement Award for the 3rd year in row.
KADAVU, FIJI ISLANDS - 25th March 2010 - Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort is proud to announce that it has again been announced as the official 2009 winner of PADI Asia Pacific Member Awards 2009 in the in the Project AWARE Marine Environmental Award 2009.

Main bure at Matava, Kadavu, Fiji

The PADI Asia Pacific Member Awards were developed to better recognise the achievements of those PADI Dive Centres and Resorts who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of diving.
In competition with more than a thousand dive centres throughout the region, Matava was awarded the great honor of this award as a token of appreciation for all the efforts and initiatives put forward by the company in the last few years.

"At Matava, we are of course both happy and proud to again receive this prestigious award. We find it even more important that the industry, by rewarding similar efforts, choose to take a stand for the environment we depend on. We also see it as an important continuing signal to the community which at the same time can serve to inspire the numerous individuals and companies who have been doing so much, and continue to do even more in the field of environmental enlightenment and conservation. This award has highlighted Fiji's leading role and efforts in this regard especially." said Matava Director, Mr Richard Akhtar.
Mr Ian Cumming, PADI Regional Director for the Fiji Islands, said "I'd just like to send my congratulations to the Team at Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort who have again taken out the Project AWARE Marine Environmental Award for 2009 for the second year running."

"Having visited the resort I know firsthand the mighty efforts everyone there have gone to to ensure the resort is very much the 'Eco Adventure' resort that has guests coming back time and again. Given the location of the resort, which adds greatly to its charm, it is a wonderful achievement that everyone involved in the resort should be very proud of!" Mr Cumming continued.

Main bure at Matava, Kadavu, FijiProject AWARE Foundation Chairman, Dr. Drew Richardson recognizes the importance of the scuba diving community taking its part in protection of global ecosystems. "This Award is about rewarding vision, excellence and pursuit of conservation. More importantly, this award ensures the enjoyment of underwater environments for future generations," states Richardson.

"Our Marine Environmental awards recognise dive operators making a positive impact on local communities and the environment, as well as providing great dive holidays! The number of outstanding environmental programs taking place is inspiring," said Joanna McNamara, Project AWARE Coordinator.

Joanne Marston, Manager of Project AWARE, said "Project AWARE Foundation is delighted that Matava's positive continuing environmental actions have been recognized by PADI Asia Pacific.  As a Project AWARE Go ECO Operator Matava show a dedication and commitment to conservation that goes above and beyond.  Congratulations again Matava."
PADI

Adopting a fresh new format that provides a system in which all PADI Members can participate, the PADI Member Awards programme was based on a system that ensured PADI Members compete with other PADI Members within their own geographical region for one of the five Awards. All PADI Dive Centres and Resorts were considered for nomination by a specially convened selection panel, who selected up to three finalists for each of the Awards.

A panel of PADI judges then considered all of the finalists and Matava is very pleased to be announced as the winner of the PADI Member Award 2009 in the category: Project AWARE Marine Environmental Award 2009.

Mr Akhtar went on to say that "This PADI Member Award gives us special recognition within the entire tourism industry and shows our customers that we are responsible and committed to reducing the environmental impacts of our business. After 7 years of hard work and commitment to our strict environmental policies, it is rewarding to be recognised again and this time by the world's largest international scuba certification agency, PADI.

Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort "Our continuing resort upgrades in 2009, and the addition of further high-tech solar power plant solutions for the Main Bure and each individual bure, we believe we are the leader in eco-sustainable resorts in the country."

Mr Akhtar finished by saying "Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort has again proved that it is indeed among the leaders in environmentally sensitive resorts worldwide, and this latest award solidifies our position as an example of how resorts can operate AND help maintain and improve the surrounding environment. To win this for 2 years running is indeed an honour and is an indication of the dedication of all the Matava staff."

Matava is fully operational after Cyclone TOMAS

Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort is 100% fully open after the cyclone passed Fiji on Tuesday 16th March 2010

KADAVU, FIJI ISLANDS - 17 December 2009 - On Monday 15th March 2010 Fiji was hit by a Category 4 Tropical Cyclone, TC TOMAS. The cyclone passed over the northern islands and well to the East of Kadavu Island.
Matava - Fiji's Premier
Eco-Adventure Resort Although the resort experienced high winds and heavy rain, no damage was done to the resort at all, apart from the loss of some thatch from the corner of the roof of the dive centre.

Extreme shore diving by Linda G!The guests and staff spent the whole day playing cards, board games and reading books safely in the Main Bure while Maggie served breakfast, lunch and dinner as normal. We even had some divers toughen up and go shore diving in the 'teeth' of the bad weather on Monday and Tuesday and get some great pics of critters on The Critter Junction dive site!

By Tuesday 16th March we were once again fishing, diving and trekking as normal, in glorious sunshine with not even a slight breeze!

The cyclone passed well east of Kadavu and was over in a couple of days of strong winds and grey weather.

Due to flight safety reasons, Pacific Sun did postpone its flights for a couple of days, but have now fully resumed services to Kadavu from Nadi.  All flights to and from Kadavu from Nadi International Airport are currently fully resumed and we have have had clients fly in and out of Kadavu today (Wednesday 18th March 2010).

We appreciate your patience in these matters, and rest assured that we are all fine and 100% fully operational at Matava - Fiji's premier Eco Adventure Resort.Wednesday morning at Matava

Perfect - Review of Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort, Kadavu Island, Fiji - TripAdvisor

This place is a little slice of heaven.

However, if you are the type that likes to be entertained or have schedules then this isn't the place for you. We spent 5 days here and didn't dive or fish but we were busy. We went kayaking, hiking, exploring the mud flats, snorkling (it's quite good right out front of the resort) and just relaxed and slept. A much needed rest.

The food was great and all staff were friendly and helpful. Oh, we did take the kayak trip to the remote village and although our guide didn't seem super pumped to be out there with us, we had a fantastic adventure with him. he was knowledgeable. The village was a highlight and the voices of the children singing to us while we hiked to the waterfall is one of my favorite memories. It was hard to leave this place.

It's rustic and wonderful, our type of place.

Kadavu Island forum: where is waisalima beach resort - TripAdvisor

Sacramento, CA

"Matava Resort is a nice dive resort on the opposite side of the island and about 40 minutes from the airstrip by boat.

It's more rustic in nature because it's built on a hillside in the jungle rather than down closer to the beachfront. Gorgeous views abound form all over the property.

They have a wonderful veggie garden and a 4 star chef offering international dishes as well as local stuff.

They also have a fully equipeed big game fishing boat captained by a record holding IGFA representative. For this kind of fishing off KDV, this is the place to stay.

Snorkeling is done at a nearshore island that you can walk to at low tide, swim to at high tide. They have great diving and good people, too. Swimming off their place is not very good - at low tide it's a sand flat. "

A Tribute to HG

Today was a sad day at Matava Resort. One of our longest serving staff members passed away. HG our security dog.

He saw this resort being built and has seen owners, staff and guests come and go. He protected this place with an iron bark that echoed throughout the island.

He never complained and could sit and listen so loyally. He took Pipi and Harley under his wing and taught them their roles as dogs at Matava resort.

The staff really do miss having him around, and we really miss our loyal coconut stealing friend.

Misty Gorillas of Kadavu - New Research

One fact usually overlooked by visitors to Kadavu Island are the rarely seen primates that inhabit the inaccessible jungle covered interior mountains.

The original black & white movie 'King Kong' was filmed on the island's South West shore in the shadow of Mt Delainabukelevu, the island's extinct volcano. A nearby world famous surf break is also named after the movie and surfers from around the world come to surf the left hand reef break - King Kong.

Though never seen near the coast, some villagers with plantations on the upper mountain slopes occasionally see evidence that the gorillas have raided their plantations for fruit.

A new scientific mission has been launched to try to track down and research these secretive animals. Head scientist Dr Jouve binhad and his team of researchers and biologists arrived this week on their research ship and set up their base camp anchored off Matava Resort. We will bring more news if their attempts prove successful.

Fiji Special from Don

We just couldn't let Don pass us by without highlighting some of his photography work here on Kadvau and Matava, as well as around the world.

"Here are some of the beautiful photos of my trip to Fiji with my diving buddy, Martin. His underwater photography is presented in the underwater section. We were so glad to be in this part of the world and for the chance to meet so many wonderful people."

He was kind enough to send us a hard back photo book for the Main Bure and all the staff to see.

Thanks Don, and we wish you all the best in your new Photo Career!

Matava Astrolabe Hideaway Matava Astrolabe Hideaway

Matava Astrolabe Hideaway is located in the lush tropical surroundings of Kadavu Island by the Great Astrolabe Reef. Matava is a small and intimate getaway that was designed to blend with its natural environment and offer comfortable and economical accommodations, world-class scuba diving and superb meals. There are no roads, towns or power lines—this true hideaway is reached only by boat!

There are nine traditional Fijian bures nestled in the rainforest. All bures have polished timber floors, four-poster beds and private decks. Solar power lighting and gas-heated water make your stay comfortable. The Oceanview Bures offer spectacular panoramas of the Great Astrolabe Reef and surrounding islands, and the Waterfront Bures are by the shore, enclosed in beautiful tropical gardens.

Meals at Matava are an imaginative blend of local and international cuisines. The menu takes advantage of local seasonal delicacies and the day`s fresh produce, incorporating locally grown organic tropical fruit and vegetables, home-style freshly baked breads and reef-caught seafood like coral trout, trevally, lobster and walu. Also, enjoy scrumptious lovo feasts, the traditional Fijian meals cooked over hot stones. Matava features a fully-stocked bar with selection of local and imported beers, wines and spirits.

If you are into fishing, you can catch your own dinner and maybe even enough to share with others. Regular catches include yellow fin and skipjack tuna, walu, barracuda, trevally and sometimes even sailfish.

Scuba diving the Great Astrolabe Reef, Fiji’s largest living structure and one of the world`s premier dive locations, is the focus here. The reef offers great diversity of both soft and hard corals, and abundance of marine life. The resident dive shop will take you the best sites around the reef and dazzle even the most experienced and well-traveled diver! All levels of diving is offered, including beginner courses.

Apart from fabulous diving, Matava offers an extensive list of fun activities. Snorkeling here is excellent, surfers will love the five passages on the reef producing long barreling waves from two to ten feet tall, and guided half day to three-day kayaking trips around the islands are a magnificent way to see the real Fiji. Matava has also established a portfolio of treks and guided walks to take advantage of the stunning scenery. And you can, of course, just relax and take in the tranquil atmosphere of the islands—stargazing is particularly good here!
